Be welcome

Dear visitor, this blog is written by the band Other Day. We got our ears pointed and finally decided to share our experiences and feelings with you, because we realized the problems in finding all information about this procedure gathered on one site in the internet. We hope you'll enjoy this blog and find some information you're looking for.

If you have any questions that aren't answered here, please feel free to contact us on Facebook or via comments.

Please feel welcome to our dreamworld.

There and back again

Hi everybody, a long time there was nothing to talk about regarding our ears.
But yesterday we decided quite spontaneously to meet Steve again so he can correct Sad's ear.
There was something like a second point developing because the stitches and the tape had to be that tight to get his ear in place (remember, Sads cartilage is so thick, it's almost a thin bone).

I will share some pictures of the "before" tomorrow when I have the chance to check my other commputer.

When we met Steve he decided to correct my right ear too. Whohoo, way to spontaneous for me 'cause I didn't had time to prepare myself for pain but nevertheless I agreed. We drove more than 400km to meet Steve so I wanted to use the change if I got one.

There wasn't much time to worry about pain and to be honest, I knew what was waiting for me.

Sad started first. There wasn't that much to do on his ear. It was just necessary to open his ear on top and to remove some of the cartilage that formed the second point. Just two stitches were needed as you can see on the picture. They will be taken out in one week by ourselves.

The look from above

Now his ear has just one cute point :3

There was a lot more work on my ear. The cartilage triangle Steve put in here two years ago didn't worked that well on my right ear. This time he changed the way he worked and cut my ear on the back. He removed some slices of cartilage to give my ear a better shape. There was a lot more blood than during Sads procedure. Now I got three stitches that will be taken out in two are three weeks (the time is needed because Sads stichtes just hold his skin together, my stitches are under pressure).

my ear is angry and swollen, so the final shape can't be seen now

I tried to give you an impression of what the stitches on the back look like,
but my ear hurts that much today that I didn't wanted to fold it forward.

Now I also understand why people wrote about pain after the procedure. I was always wondering because after our two ear pointings wether Sad or I had pain (just some hours but the day after the procedure we were already feeling fine). I read about people who had their ears done by Samppa, that there was a lot of pain. It seems that the pain depends on the way your ear was created: if it is folded (like Steve does), the pain is gone after some hours (at least it was for us, maybe it defers from individual to individual), if is resculptured (like Samppa does) it hurts way more.
Yesterday Steve did some resculpturing and no folding and today my head and my ear are really hurting. Sometimes it feels that my ear even hurts during facial expressions. Sad has no problems at all, he was feeling fine also one or two hours during the procedure. I couldn't sleep at all, because I always woke up because of the pain. Today it is...bearable. I didn't took any pain killers till now (but I always avoid taking such chemical stuff). The pain is just annoying because it's always there.... more or less, like toothache. Will see what tomorrow brings :)

change in hearing

we found an interesting article about the change in hearing after having your ears pointed:

Dr. Lajos Nagy claims that his cosmetic surgery technique of pointing ears can actually "improve the experience of listening to music.

Why are pointed ears more sensitive?

One of its reasons is rather simple: pointed ears focus sounds in a better way, which, in the case of animals, is supplemented by the fact that they can orientate themselves towards the source of sounds without turning their heads, by moving only their ears.

The other reason is the own frequency of the pinnae, as being solid objects themselves, which changes together with their shape. Pointed ears resonate with sounds at the frequency of around 8 kHz, thus they amplify sharp sounds instead of the intermediate frequencies. This is the reason why, amongst other things, dogs are sensitive to ultrasonic sounds, which are imperceptible for human ears.

Although turning the pinnae still remains impossible for human beings according to its anatomic features, the advantages of pointed ears can be enjoyed once again with the help of a simple, routine operation.

We are not sure if this is a noticeable effect. After the first ear pointing we didn't recognized much. After the second ear pointing at least Niha had problems with really high tone. At the moment we don't recognize it anymore. Maybe because we get used to it.

possible outcomes

we would like to share a tumblr-entry with you. it is about possible results of your ear pointing.

"The final outcome seems to depend a great deal on the individual structure of the ear and the strength/flexibility (or inflexibility) of the ear cartilage. Some maintain their shape much better than others when compared to the initial shape immediately following the procedure" (read the whole entry)

And yes, we totally agree with this. Yes, you will have a picture in min about the look of you ears, and yes, you will choose the artist that makes the best ears in your opinion but nobody can guarantee the final result in detail. Every ear is different (also your two ears aren’t the same "sisters but no twins" like Steve said), so the artist can’t tell you through the internet what is possible with your ear. Sometimes they just recognize some special properties of your ear (like Sad’s thick cartilage) when they are working on it.

what could go wrong

To keep this blog clear we want to share our second link in a separate entry:

please choose your artist well! Don’t choose your artist because of the price! Only people with a lot of experience can handle such a difficult surgery!

Look what can go wrong:

does this look like the ears you dreamed of? Probably not!

Maybe you also found this pictures during your research:

Sorry for this disgusting picture but people can never be warned too often. The whole story behind these pictures we found here:

Ear Pointing fail

To make a long story short:
You can see the ear of a person who let an amateur body modifier do their ear pointing because they didn’t want to spend the money to have it done by someone qualified. That is why her ears were cut and folded over at an extreme angle (not to mention how hilarious inappropriate paper towels are that are used as a DIY surgical drape). In photo 2 (day one) and 3 (day five) the ear is starting to tear open. You can also see an infection, made worse by insufficient care on the part of the client.  By the end of the first week (photo 4) the sutures have completely torn out and the ear is back to its original shape, minus the part that was cut out.

At the end the infection went through the majority of the cartilage, so her ear was cleaned up at the hospital. Some cartilage was lost.
Here you can see her ear at the other side two years afterwards: ear
But don’t forget: this isn ’t a photo of the other side that matches the more damaged ear and it shows the ear in the best possible light.

There is no excuse for working in an unsafe and unclean environment. There is no excuse for going to an unqualified practitioner. There is no excuse for not caring for your body and not listening to your body.

You just have one pair of ears, so choose your artist well!

share some news

Hi everybody,

our ears are awesome now ;) but we found some new stuff which we would like to share with you. Because we like to have all information gathered in one place, we will link a short blog entry about the work of Samppa Von Cyborg. It is really amazing what kind of ears he creates and he definitely creates the second generation of ears:
